Long a favorite with many, the Churchwarden has seen a resurgence in popularity due to the release of the epic Lord of the Rings. Churchwarden shaped pipes got their humble beginnings from old clay tavern pipes which were like public pipes made with a long shank so that each visitor to the tavern would have something to smoke if wanted. Each person would grab a pipe and smoke it and when finished with their smoke that night, break off a small section of the shank and place it back up where the tavern keep had them stationed. From these beginnings came the Churchwarden pipe with it's long bit which gives a comfortable smooth smoke as the smoke cools through the long bit before it gets to the smokers mouth and tongue.
